How to build a QR code campaign people can understand

A QR code is a doorway, not the campaign. People need a reason to scan it, a clear mobile destination, and confidence that the result matches the promise printed beside the code.

The short answer

Pair every QR code with a plain-language reason to scan, route it to a fast mobile page, test it in the real environment, and track the destination separately from other channels.

01

Write the scan promise first

Place a short instruction beside the code: view the menu, register the product, watch the setup video, join the event list, or see the collection. A visible promise increases confidence.

02

Build a focused landing page

The destination should continue the message from the physical placement. Avoid making scanners search a general homepage for the action they were promised.

03

Test the real object and environment

Print or display the code at final size. Test common phone cameras at the expected distance and angle, under realistic lighting, and on the network visitors will use.

04

Separate campaign routes

Use a distinct short link for each placement or campaign version. That makes it possible to compare a package insert, event sign, direct mail piece, or store display.

Questions

Where should a marketing QR code lead?+

Send it to the most relevant mobile action for that placement, such as a product guide, signup, menu, event page, video, support route, or campaign landing page.

Can the destination change after printing?+

Yes, when the QR code points to a managed short link. Update the final destination while keeping the printed code the same.

How do I track QR scans?+

Route the code through a dedicated tracked short link and compare its clicks over time. Use separate routes for placements you want to measure independently.
